an old memory

A memory of the Mumbai Central railway station - a few yrs ago..about 8 years i guess...

I was going home after the 1st semester break during engineering. I had come down to Mumbai from Pune to board the Punjab mail to my home in Delhi. I reached Mumbai with my friend from engg and went to my school friends place in Mumbai.

Met him after more than an year but it was still like old times. Had good fun at his place and it was good to see the friendship continue.

He came to drop us at Mumbai central from where we had to board the train and he too wanted to jump onto it..he too wanted to go to Delhi after all someone very important to him lived there..he was as desperate as anyone could be..to board that train with me..but then he knew he couldnt at that point of time...and all i could do was tell him.."dude...dont worry..everythings gonna be ok..just hang in and have faith"...

its been 8 years since then...life has been good to him..and everythings good...and i am happy for him..and for the fact that we still are friends...

Kingfisher - the king of good times

"Dude..how many beers will you have"?? I asked my friend Nitin...

"2 cans for me"...Nitin replied...

"Give me 4 cans..Kingfisher strong".. i said to the shopkeeper..we had bought the snacks to eat along..Nitin grabbed a few smokes..and we headed to our abode...the balcony outside the bedroom in my apartment...

I arranged two chairs in the balcony.. Nitin got the smokes and lighter..i placed the beer cans on the window shelf and we sat down..there was a slight breeze about...

"The weather is nice today" said Nitin lighting up his smoke..."Gimme a can dude"..he said..

I handed him a can and took one for myself..we opened the cans and toasted to our friendship..the beer wasnt chilled as it was in the open for sometime..but then who cared..

"Do you remember the Ranikhet trip"..Nitin said...and i said.."yeah......."

and the night went on and we just talked about the good old school days...

This was our routine..on the Friday/Sat night that Nitin came to my town from Mumbai..we would have our diner..then go the booze shop..get our beer..Nitin would get his smokes and then we would head back to the flat..go to the balcony..arrange two chairs...sit down..open our cans of beer ..rest our feet on the railing...look at the greenery engulfing the balcony and chat about our school days...

Cheers guys!!

PM And The Speech-Writer - TOI

PM And The Speech-Writer…

Surely freedom’s not just another word on Independence Day? Chetan Bhagat

On August 14, 2010, inside a quiet, leafy, guarded bungalow on Race Course Road, a stressed old man shifted uncomfortably on his sofa. A young man next to him offered solace.

“You’ll be fine. You’ve done it before. It’s only the Independence Day,” the young man said as he stacked sheets of paper.

“Do i have to give a speech?” the old man said, “I hate to talk.”

“But you are the prime minister,” the young man said, “And i am here, your speech-writer. Why worry?”

The PM remained uncomfortable. He looked at his phone. No calls or messages from high command. Without direction, life was extra hard.

The writer continued, “It’s mostly school kids who attend. There is no Q&A at the end. Unfurl the flag, stand for the national anthem, take the gun salute, read the speech – it is standard stuff.”

“Everyone gets a holiday on Independence Day,” the PM said, “why can’t i?”

The speech-writer was speechless. He changed the topic.

“Should we talk about the content?” the writer said, “what do you want to focus on?”

“I don’t know. What do you suggest?” the PM said. “Is there anything worth talking about?”

The speech-writer paused to look at the PM in disbelief before he spoke again: “So much has happened. Just in the past months.”

“Like what?” the PM said. “Like the Bhopal verdict – no real punishment.” “Yes, but i don’t have to talk about that,” the PM said, “that story has died.” “Along with the thousands,” the writer mumbled. “What?” the PM said. “Nothing. How about the crazy inflation? People are truly sick of it,” the writer said. “Really?” the PM said. “Really what? That there is inflation or people are sick of it?” the writer said. “Both i guess. I never buy anything. People do it for me. And i can’t talk about inflation. It’s too sensitive an issue.”

“But it affects your people,” the writer said. “Next,” the PM said. “Corruption? Look at the Commonwealth Games – full of murkiness. Why don’t you resolve to bring the criminals to book.” “Criminals who?” the PM said. “The politicians and officials who did it,” the writer said. “But they are important people,” the PM said. “They’ve broken the law. Isn’t the law the same for everyone?” the writer said. “It is?” the PM said. The writer could only raise his eyebrows in response. “It can’t be the same law. Have you ever seen any high-profile official in jail for corruption?” the PM said. “Any?” The writer shook his head. “I don’t like to make false promises,” the PM said. “Of course,” the writer said and cleared his throat, “how about Kashmir? Violence has flared up there. Or maybe we can combine it with the Naxalite disturbance and talk about internal strife?” “Talk what?” the PM said, “why do people like to talk? Why?” “Talk to show you care,” the writer said, “and talk about solving the issues, of course.” “Is that my job?” the PM said. “You are the prime minister. The most powerful person in the country. You can make things happen,” the writer said. “Stop making fun of me,” the PM said, “other topics?”

“India-Pakistan relations,” the writer said.

“I am not allowed to talk about that,” the PM said.

“Not allowed?” the writer said, confused on who could disallow the PM. The PM raised one eyebrow to the framed pictures on the wall above. The writer saw the person the PM was referring to. Both exchanged half smiles.

“It’s OK. I am used to it now,” the PM said.

The writer stretched his arms out. “I’m out of ideas. You guide me, sir. We don’t have that much time.” “General topics,” the PM said, “just make it broad enough that there is no controversy. But not so boring that the guards and kids go to sleep,” the PM said.

The writer bit his upper lip to mull over the PM’s suggestion.

“Like i’ll tell you,” the PM explained, “talk about poverty – reducing it, of course. And education. And stuff like we won’t tolerate injustice and inequality. Oh, and use the word superpower a couple of times – just don’t mention a specific issue or put a real opinion.”

The writer nodded slowly as he absorbed the instructions.

“OK, sir, in that case, all i have to do is look at last few years’ speeches and cut-and-paste to make a new one.”

The PM’s eyes opened wide as he shook his head. “Don’t!” he said, using his rare loud voice, “don’t do that. The TV channels catch on to the cut-and-paste. Who’s that feisty TV anchor?”

“Barkha Dutt?” the writer said.

“Yeah, her. She’ll rip it apart. Not to mention that Rajdeep Sardesai and Arnab Goswami and Deepak Chaurasia. They track all the copy-paste stuff, they’ll talk non-stop about it,” the PM said.

“OK, OK, won’t refer to the past speeches,” the writer said.

“No you can. Just make sure it is from speeches at least 20 years ago, before these anchors started work.”

“Oh, OK,” the writer said, “the content is the same anyway. Fine sir, you’ll have it in two hours.”

The writer stood up to leave. The PM escorted him to the door.

“You are a quick learner, i wish you all the success in life,” the PM said.

“Thank you sir. I wish you... well, what can i wish you? You have everything.”

“Wish me freedom, real freedom,” the PM said, looking at the writer in his eyes as the door shut between them.

The writer is a best-selling novelist.

The western ghats

It has been a while since i have posted anything. Well here i am again writing about my recent trip on the Mumbai Pune expressway.

The best time to cross the Western ghats is during the monsoon season. It is just the most amazing scenic view that one can imagine, lush green mountains, small waterfalls on every mountain or atleast on most of them, clouds and mist kissing your vehicle and you passing through them and the omni present rain in the form of drizzle or downpour. Isnt this all so amazing!!

Well i had to go to Pune from Mumbai for work reasons and i preferred to travel by the expressway. The expressway cuts across the western ghats to reach Pune. The western ghats start from Khopoli and end after Lonawala. The total stretch would be around 30 odd kilometres but it is an amazing stretch. Valleys, mountains, waterfalls, tunnels, lakes in the distance, greenery, all of it in abundance. When it is about to rain the clouds descend to the ghats and the view at that time is absolutely magical and very romantic too. You would love to be sitting there on the hillside and all of a sudden the clouds would engulf you (trust me it is not scary).

Here are some pics which i took on my way to Pune.

Hope you guys enjoy the pics :)

Cheers!!

the first rain..

finally the weekend had arrived...rahul was looking forward to the weekend after a long and tiring week at work...he hadnt been able to talk to saloni as much as they both would have wanted to and with the world cup beginning and the last match for the day scheduled at midnight..those long late night talks were going to be cut short for sometime...

He woke up at 10am on Saturday and lazed around a bit in the bed...slept for another half and hour then finally woke up..had his breakfast and called up saloni to see if she was awake...she had been up since 8am....they talked for about 30mins and made their plan for the day..they decided to meet up in the afternoon and catch up a movie and then see what else they could do...

rahul went down to the parking lot at 2pm and started his car...and drove down towards saloni's place, the other end of the city at 40kms away...he reached there at 3...saloni was already waiting for him in the parking..all eager to hug him and be with him..it had been 3 days since they had met up....once she was in the car..they were on their way to the multiplex to watch the movie....saloni opened the window to let the wind blow into her long beautiful hair..and then out of nowhere the air got filled with the fragrance of first drops of water falling on the dry soil..and then the drops become more prominent and huge in number..the windscreen was getting splattered with millions and millions of water drops forming their own tributaries..

rahul stopped the car on the highway at an empty stretch...and got down in the rain..it was the most amazing feeling..getting wet in the rain..saloni was a bit hesitant to come out..but then rahul pulled her out of the car and they both just stood there getting wet in the rain and enjoying the moment...saloni hugged rahul and whispered the 3 magical words once again into his ears..the 3 words which always made them smile....so after getting wet in the rain for sometime..they got back into the car...and headed to find a place to eat garma garma pakodas and drink some hot tea....and like always saloni held rahul's hand on the gear as they drove ahead...

Sachin Tendulkar

Time Magazine on Sachin Tendulkar`s Journey

When Sachin Tendulkar travelled to Pakistan to face one of the finest bowling attacks ever assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Diego Maradona was still the captain of a world champion Argentina team, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam.

When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran and company, Roger Federer was a name unheard of; Lionel Messi was in his nappies, Usain Bolt was an unknown kid in the Jamaican backwaters. The Berlin Wall was still intact, USSR was one big, big country, Dr Manmohan Singh was yet to "open" the Nehruvian economy.

It seems while Time was having his toll on every individual on the face of this planet, he excused one man. Time stands frozen in front of Sachin Tendulkar. We have had champions, we have had legends, but we have never had another Sachin Tendulkar and we never will.

Invictus

I just finished watching Invictus and all i could say at the end of the movie was "wow". It really blows your mind and heart away.

This movie is pure inspiration on Leadership. It connects to you on all levels. Re-building a nation takes more than just being in power. Being at the top with all the power also means the responsibility to lead those who are under you. This is what Invictus is all about. Pure leadership.

Leadership at its best...

Clint Eastwood/Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon have done an amazing job in making such an amazing movie.

For all those who havent seen it, then let me tell you are missing out on something really amazing..

Being at peace with myself

What does going to a place of worship like a Gurudwara or a temple mean to anyone?

I dont know what it means to others but for me it is the chance or the opportunity that i get to be with me and only me. Sitting there listening to the shabad kirtan (hymns) simply allows you to be with yourself and let go off everything else. It allows me to seek forgiveness for anything wrong that i may have done intentionally or unintentionally. It allows me to forgive those who may have done wrong to me intentionally or unintentionally.

Being there allows me to be at peace with myself. It strengthens my faith in the fact that there is someone out there watching over you who will be with you till the time you are doing the right thing. It allows me to be a stronger man to take on the world and fight another day.

Sometimes i get to go to the Gurudwara but sometimes i dont and when i dont all i have to do is close my eyes and say to myself a small prayer concluding with "Wahe guru ji da khalsa..wahe guru ji de fateh".

Jetlite S2 656

I recently had a very interesting flight on my way back from Goa (official conference). On our way back i was on board the Jetlite S2 656 flight from Goa to Mumbai.

Once everyone was onboard and the doors were shut...the captain spoke "Ladies and gentleman and kids if any, it is my pleasure to welcome you aboard our Jetlite flight s2 656 to Mumbai. Flight officer Ms abcd efgh will be flying all you wonderful people to Mumbai on her first flight today. Our spectacular crew led by Ms xyz will try their best to live upto your expectations so that you have a wonderful flight. Having said that let me also tell you that once we take off for the passengers sitting on the right side of the aisle will be able to see the wonderful beaches of Goa and for the passengers sitting on the left..umm..sorry..theres ntn on that side. They say that a man's best friend is a dog but for all the passengers on the right side their best friend at this point of time would be a pair of powerful binoculars"..and he went on for 5 - 10mins...this ensured that everyone was laughing like crazy on the flight..

and then in the end he said.."folks, let me tell you that we are going to be on the taxiway for some more time as we dont have take off clearance yet and i dont know how long it can take"...

this is something that should have had everybody cursing the flight crew, the airport authorities and what not but then here on this flight..even after saying all this..the passengers gave a big hand and applauded the effort of the captain...no one seemed to mind that the flight got delayed..

This is what is called innovation in customer service.

cheers!!

Nostalgia

What am i doing today..Nothing much actually but just remembering the awesome times i had during my MBA..was just going through the Nostalgia DVD to see the amazing photographic memories and what each one of us wrote about each other..

It was an amazing time and those 2 years just flew by. It wouldnt have happened if i hadnt had those friends with me there. I dont know if any of you read my blog but you all rock and together we rocked during our MBA.

Some interesting incidents from MBA

BV class:
Prof : Tell me the difference between balance sheet and income statement..
Student : Sir, Balance sheet is a photograph of a company. Income statement is a video of the company!!

Student 1(name changed due to request): What will happen to a salesperson selling sanitary napkins if he helps them in trying it out.
Student 2: He would be caught red handed.

During KM
Student1:I would suggest the Marketing Manager to be the knowledge Management Head
Student2:How do you suppose a non technical person like the Marketing Manager to Head Knowledge Management
Studen1:It can happen that way, like you got into infosys.
(The whole class bursts out laughing)
Student2: Grrrrr....

Oh and BTW, this blog also came to life during my MBA only :)

Cheers!!
